Georgetown was established in 1791 when Delaware's General Assembly moved the county seat from Lewes to a central tract. The town was named after Commissioner George Mitchell, who drove the centralization of Sussex County government.
Its center, The Circle, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is dominated by the red brick Greek Revival courthouse built in 1839. Every two years, The Circle is the center of the traditional Return Day celebration, held the Thursday after general elections.
Located near the geographic center of Sussex County, Georgetown combines county government services, residential areas, local businesses, and access via Routes 113 and 9. It's a practical base from which to reach the coastal beaches and other county towns.
Living in Georgetown offers local services and a central location, but it isn't the ideal fit for everyone. It's worth weighing commute, lifestyle, and personal priorities before deciding.
